Call him "Captain America" of the Axeon Hagens Berman Cycling Team.
Geoffrey Curran won both the USA Cycling Under 23 national road and time trial championship last July to earn the right to wear the stars and stripes in every race he competes in on that level this spring and summer. The accomplishment – which also saw two teammates stand with him on each of the podiums – came as a surprise, he said.
"I never really even thought about doing well on the time trial bike at all," he said. "It was something that came about beginning with the Redlands Classic (where he finished fifth). Doing it once and having success builds confidence. Then it comes down to consistency. Then you start targeting it, so you put in more time. Everything just falls into place from there."
But looking back, it is not the individual honors – like a top 10 finish at the Under 23 world time trial championships – that stand out heading into his fourth and final season with the team.
"For me, it was the Olympia's Tour," he said. "I was able to take basically the whole two-and-a-half years of experience with the national team and put it all together, particularly on the last day. It was exciting to be able to have options if things aren't working physically and mentally. You are able to do things you were not able to do before."
