The end of stage 15 at the 2020 Giro d’Italia saw yet another Axeon alumnus standing on the top of the podium as Tao Geoghegan Hart found separation from a small group with 150 meters left until the summit finish to Piancavallo. Though he came close on stage 13 (finishing 4th), Sunday’s result marks the first grand tour victory of the young Brit’s career.
“I’ve only won a few races in my career so this is something incredible to me,” Geoghegan Hart said. “For me, crossing the line first is something truly incredible.”
The win moved Tao up 6 places in the general classification, 2 seconds off the podium and 2:57 off the leader, Axeon alumnus João Almeida (Deceuninck-QuickStep). Tao’s victory is also the 4th of this year’s Giro by Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team alumni, following Ineos Grenadiers teammate Jhonatan Narváez, Alex Dowsett (Israel Start-Up Nation), and 2016 teammate Ruben Guerreiro (EF Education First Pro Cycling).
Tao was a member of the Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling from 2014 until 2016 when he graduated to the World Tour and joined Team Sky.
