Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team alumnus Jasper Philipsen [UAE Team Emirates] followed his former teammate’s unprecedented successes at the 2020 Giro d’Italia by earning his first grand tour victory on stage 15 at the La Vuelta ciclista a España. Jasper outsprinted Pascal Ackermann (Bora – Hansgrohe) and Jannik Steimle (Deceuninck – Quick Step) after a long and grueling stage in Northwestern Spain.

“It’s an incredible emotion that I can’t describe,” Jasper told reporters. “This victory is very important to me, I have been waiting for the right moment throughout the Vuelta, and it has finally arrived. At the beginning of the stage I didn’t think it could be my day, but in the end I was ready for a final that turned out to be ideal for me.”

The 22-year-old Belgian came close to victory eleven days prior on stage 4 when he was narrowly beaten to the line by Sam Bennett (Deceuninck - Quick Step). His win is UAE Team Emirates’ first victory at this year's La Vuelta.

Jasper was a member of the 2018 Axeon squad. During the season he earned the overall victory at Le Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux as well as won stages at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and the U23 Giro d’Italia.

Jasper was signed by Apelcin-Fenix for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
