The Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team continues its tradition of developing young riders from Portugal and is excited to announce the addition of Gonçalo Tavares to next year’s roster. Gonçalo joins Axeon from the Bairrada Cycling Team.

“Joining Hagens Berman Axeon is a big step that makes me very motivated and excited, even more seeing all the great talents that leave there and go to the World Tour,” said Gonçalo. “It leaves me in no doubt that this is the right environment to grow and evolve.”

In 2022, the 18-year-old from Proença-a-Nova earned top 10 finishes at Gipuzkoa Klasika, Tour du Pays de Vaud, and Giro Della Lunigiana. Gonçalo also showed his climbing ability in winning the mountains classification at Tour de Gironde International. “I have no doubts when I say that my most memorable victory was the 4th stage of the Junior Tour of Portugal, being relatively close to home with my family at the finish line applauding was something remarkable that I will never forget,” he said.

“Gonçalo has been in the slipstream of Antonio (Morgado) and shows good potential,” said sport director Koos Moerenhout. “Our program will give him the opportunity to see what type of rider he really is and where he can accelerate best. ”

Gonçalo is the fourth rider added to the Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team’s 2023 roster after Artem Shmidt, Nino de Jong, and Antonio Morgado.
