Portuguese riders have all but become a mainstay on the Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team roster over the past eight years. Diogo Barbosa is the most recent rider to join from his home country of Portugal and from Caja Rural-Seguros RGA.
“Joining Hagens Berman Axeon means to me a dream come true and a huge pride to see that my hard work is being rewarded,” said an elated Diogo.
The 21-year-old from Paredes (Porto) had an extremely short 2020 season, competing only in the U23 Portuguese National Championships. Diogo finished in 20th place in the road race and 14th in the individual time trial. In 2021, he placed 3rd at the Portuguese National Championships in the individual time trial. He was also 5th in the youth classification at Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta (2.Pro).
Diogo considers himself a complete cyclist, “I climb reasonably well, I roll well, I am fast in small groups, and above all I have a huge team spirit,” he said. This year he hopes to improve in the individual time trial.
Sport director Koos Moerenhout has long been optimistic about Diogo’s ability to be fast in those small groups, eagerness to improve, and add to the team.
